Komen Puget Sound Celebrates Success of Partnership with Sikh Community Leaders

Eleven years ago Komen Puget Sound, with the support of Mr. Balwant Aulck, Mrs. Daljit Grewal, Mr. Jaideep Chimni, the Sikh Centre of Seattle and a group of providers hosted the first mammogram screenings at the Gurudwara Temple in Bothell. During this time, we have continually looked for ways in which we can improve the mammogram screening process and sought to remove barriers to ensure that our community will have a better chance of surviving breast cancer.

“SOCH Center is the powerhouse of my life, boosting energy in all three arteries in personal, professional and philanthropist life. I thank God every day for bestowing me such a wonderful group of selfless and truly humanitarian individuals, who relentlessly are serving humanity at large. We have an amazing team.” – Rahul Kaul

Eight years ago Komen presented the opportunity to include other health services and open the event to the entire community to Mr. Balwant, Ms. Daljit and Mr. Jaideep. We knew that by including families we could create layers of opportunities for women to gain the support of their families and attend the screenings. Komen’s role:

  • Invited organizations and agencies that could offer medical services at no cost to the community. Among them: Promoting Good Health Latinos, Molina Healthcare, Medical Team, WHO, Swedish and the King County Public Health Department.
  • Coordinated 1-2 meetings before the event with all partners and community leaders to coordinate processes and communication.
  • Developed and implemented cultural sensitivity training to all providers.

Mr. Balwant, Mrs. Daljit and Mr. Jaideep coordinated communication with other leaders from the Temple, secured interpreters, volunteers and promoted the Health Camp among other Temples. It is amazing to see a new group of volunteers and leaders like Rahul Kaul joining the effort and taking on an important role.

To this day, thanks to the leaders of the Sikh community, Komen Puget Sound, the Latinos Promoting Good Health Statewide Committee and other partners, we have provided more than 294 mammograms, more than 500 cholesterol, glucose, BMI and blood pressure tests, more than 200 flu shots, more than 190 dental services, information about health insurance options, Orca lift cards, navigation of the health system and more.

TOGETHER, we have helped eliminate barriers and created opportunities for our community!
